Summary

White Horse is a gritty, vibrant debut from Erika T。 Wurth about an Indigenous woman who must face her past when she discovers a bracelet haunted by her mother’s spirit。

Some people are haunted in more ways than one。

Heavy metal, ripped jeans, Stephen King novels, and the occasional beer at the White Horse have defined urban Indian Kari James’s life so far。 But when her cousin Debby finds an old family bracelet that once belonged to Kari’s mother, it inadvertently calls up both her mother’s ghost and a monstrous entity, and her willful ignorance about her past is no longer sustainable…

Haunted by visions of her mother and hunted by this mysterious creature, Kari must search for what happened to her mother all those years ago。 Her father, permanently disabled from a car crash, can’t help her。 Her Auntie Squeaker seems to know something but isn’t eager to give it all up at once。 Debby’s anxious to help, but her controlling husband keeps getting in the way。 Kari’s journey toward a truth long denied by both her family and law enforcement forces her to confront her dysfunctional relationships, thoughts about a friend she lost in childhood, and her desire for the one thing she’s always wanted but could never have。

I really enjoyed this。 It was a different take on a classic genra。

Honestly didn’t find this particularly appealing。 I enjoyed the overall premise but it felt more thriller less horror but without the fast paced, exciting nature of thrillers

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Yes, we get it。 You’re an edgy heavy metal lover who drinks, smokes, and use to party hard。 Also the word “crotchfruit”? Trashy。 Kari (main character) claims to be 35 years old, but really talks and acts like 20。 Story also had mixed messages, trying to come off as feminist but really wasn’t。 It had three different story lines going and tbh I was more interested if Debby would leave or not (She sadly did not clap her tiny white hands out of that abusive marriage)。 Also The Shining obsession came Yes, we get it。 You’re an edgy heavy metal lover who drinks, smokes, and use to party hard。 Also the word “crotchfruit”? She wastes a chapter going through a tour (On a serious note, if you’re visiting Estes Park in Colorado you really need to do the Stanley tour)。 Sadly the worst book I’ve read this year。 。。。more

This book started super slow for me。 I almost gave it up but I’m glad I didn’t, as it really became interesting about 2/3rds into it with a really phenomenal ending。 Carrie James is a metal loving suburban half Native American who knows little about her roots, and doesn’t really care to。 All she knows is her mom disappeared when she was a newborn。 It isn’t until she comes in contact with an item of her mother’s that she starts to be haunted by her ghost, and some other less than ideal entities。 This book started super slow for me。 I almost gave it up but I’m glad I didn’t, as it really became interesting about 2/3rds into it with a really phenomenal ending。 Carrie James is a metal loving suburban half Native American who knows little about her roots, and doesn’t really care to。 All she knows is her mom disappeared when she was a newborn。 It isn’t until she comes in contact with an item of her mother’s that she starts to be haunted by her ghost, and some other less than ideal entities。 Will she get to the truth of what happened to her mother? 。。。more

Wurth’s characters are so vibrant and real in this book。 Kari’s pain and trauma is not only relatable but palpable as she searches for answers regarding her mothers death。 I have it 3 stars because the writing did seem rushed in a few spots, making the book feel wrapped too quickly。 But the story was incredible, and the ending was amazing。 Definitely would recommend to others。

More of a 2。5, but as I wrote this review I couldn't give it a 3 based on potential alone。 The amount of time dedicated to different story elements was off for me。 There was too much time spent on her cousin's marital issues and not enough time with the folklore or really diving deep into Kari's growth as the protagonist。 I also get that we all love Stephen King, but references to his work need to make sense within the context of the story and it felt really forced most of the time。 The ending w More of a 2。5, but as I wrote this review I couldn't give it a 3 based on potential alone。 The amount of time dedicated to different story elements was off for me。 There was too much time spent on her cousin's marital issues and not enough time with the folklore or really diving deep into Kari's growth as the protagonist。 I also get that we all love Stephen King, but references to his work need to make sense within the context of the story and it felt really forced most of the time。 The ending was predictable and rushed which was a disappointment。 Ultimately this reads like a person's first foray into writing a novel, and leans too heavily on fandom and material they've read before。 。。。more

Unfortunately this book was just not for me。 I’m not a big fan of heavy metal and especially metallica or megadeath but it was talked about so much in this book I got bored and almost irritated with it immediately。 I also saw the plot twist within the first 50 to 100 pages。

This was an entertaining read - Urban Indian murder mystery intertwined with some Indigenous lore。 This was such a unique story - I loved it!

This book felt like it started as a short story then someone said “this could be a novel!” and forced out another 200 pages beyond what it needed。 The storyline was interesting, but most of the characters were really unlikeable and the writing style didn’t flow。

This was super slow at the beginning and there are some parts that either didn’t need to be in there or didn’t make sense。 It got good in the last 100 pages though, and the ending was good。 The main character is a little hard to relate to。

I think overall for me this is more a 3。5 star read。 I enjoyed parts of the story but the beginning was a bit slow to start。 I also really hated Jack and some of the commentary surrounding him and Debby’s relationship。 I didn’t feel like he was a good man regardless of what the book kept telling me。 Could he eventually be one? Yeah maybe, but he definitely was not my idea of a good man。 The actual mystery and more horror aspects were done really well and I wished we could have seen a bit more of I think overall for me this is more a 3。5 star read。 I enjoyed parts of the story but the beginning was a bit slow to start。 I also really hated Jack and some of the commentary surrounding him and Debby’s relationship。 I didn’t feel like he was a good man regardless of what the book kept telling me。 Could he eventually be one? "White Horse" by Erika T。 Wurth follows a woman who is, being hunted by the ghost of her mother who abandoned her when she was 2 years old。 I would give "White Horse" by Erika T。 Wurth a 3-star review because, 1; the plot and theme was interesting but 2; the beginning was so hard to get through 3; there were alot of sub parts that didn't need to be their I kept thinking as I was reading that somehow they would all connect but nope and 4; it felt like the story was dragging out and super slow。 "White Horse" by Erika T。 Wurth follows a woman who is, being hunted by the ghost of her mother who abandoned her when she was 2 years old。 I would give "White Horse" by Erika T。 Wurth a 3-star review because, 1; the plot and theme was interesting but 2; the beginning was so hard to get through 3; there were alot of sub parts that didn't need to be their I kept thinking as I was reading that somehow they would all connect but nope and 4; it felt like the story was dragging out and super slow。 。。。more

I。。。am confused。 From reading this, I learned that Wurth is a talented writer。 Just her writing ability alone made me want to finish this。 She has an amazing way with words。 However, there were way too many editorial issues in my opinion that should've and could've been addressed, too many character development things that annoyed me, and as much as I loved Wurth's writing and wanted to know the twist, I was not satisfied。 The story made sense but the conclusion was not great。 I feel the build-u I。。。am confused。 From reading this, I learned that Wurth is a talented writer。 Just her writing ability alone made me want to finish this。 She has an amazing way with words。 However, there were way too many editorial issues in my opinion that should've and could've been addressed, too many character development things that annoyed me, and as much as I loved Wurth's writing and wanted to know the twist, I was not satisfied。 The story made sense but the conclusion was not great。 I feel the build-up worked and the anticipation definitely hooked me BUT when the reveal came it wasn't that release it was like "ok。。。。。。。but is there more"。 I'm eager for more from Wurth but this book definitely felt like it needed more editing/revision or even to be a little longer to help tie in things。 。。。more

3。5! This was a ride, fun and spirally。 I grew to love the main character Kari very much。 The White Horse, too。 You should read this!

I read a review on here that called this a hot mess, and I have to somewhat agree。 The story seems to try too hard, but it's still good and it kept me reading, which is worth something。The writing style is pretty plain, which keeps it moving。 There's a lot that left me going "huh。" I've read Native American lit before, books written by Indians that came off reservations, and the writing has always been solid and tight and relatable, not that this book isn't the last, but it isn't the first two。 I read a review on here that called this a hot mess, and I have to somewhat agree。 The story seems to try too hard, but it's still good and it kept me reading, which is worth something。The writing style is pretty plain, which keeps it moving。 There's a lot that left me going "huh。" I've read Native American lit before, books written by Indians that came off reservations, and the writing has always been solid and tight and relatable, not that this book isn't the last, but it isn't the first two。 So I've kind of decided, just like The Removed by Brandon Hobson, there's a difference between literature written by Native Americans who come from reservations and literature written by "urban" Native Americans, the people who have the heritage but not the experiences, so to speak。 It's not bad, but it doesn't seem nearly as down to earth。Also, two things: no banker is going to call at roughly ten o'clock at night, and if Colorado is anything like Montana or North Dakota, you can't get your GED until you're eighteen。 You can't drop out of school at fifteen and just "get" it and go on with your life。 。。。more

I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this book at all。I didn't have any expectations going into this book。。。 But I feel like it didn't meet my expectations at all。I don't know what I wanted to expect but I wasn't expecting the way this story was executed and I don't know if I feel justified or disappointed in the fact I read this。 I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this book at all。I didn't have any expectations going into this book。。。 But I feel like it didn't meet my expectations at all。I don't know what I wanted to expect but I wasn't expecting the way this story was executed and I don't know if I feel justified or disappointed in the fact I read this。 。。。more

Incredibly fast read that had great depictions of the atmosphere (I felt like I smelled like cigarette smoke and whiskey after reading this one)。You follow Kari, a 35-year-old urban Native American living in Colorado trying to make ends meet。I know next to nothing about Native American history, so it was enlightening and beautiful to read about how the author wove in those elements to this novel, even touching on a bit of fantasy。I thought this novel was extremely slow at times, but liked where Incredibly fast read that had great depictions of the atmosphere (I felt like I smelled like cigarette smoke and whiskey after reading this one)。You follow Kari, a 35-year-old urban Native American living in Colorado trying to make ends meet。I know next to nothing about Native American history, so it was enlightening and beautiful to read about how the author wove in those elements to this novel, even touching on a bit of fantasy。I thought this novel was extremely slow at times, but liked where the author took the story。When Kari was finding out more and more about her mother’s disappearance/murder, I had no idea what was coming next。But I didn’t like how much time she spent on her relationship with Debby and her issues with Jack。 It was a little overkill。Was a gritty read, atrocious at points, but overall just okay。 。。。more

Wow, what an incredible novel, a thriller steeped with history and fable。 Light on the horror imo but a really well crafted page turner of a tale!

I liked this book, but it was a little neat/obvious in parts。 I wanted and expected something just a little more mysterious or dark (more Sara Gran, haha)。

I REALLY LOVED THIS。 it felt a little clunky sometimes in the dialogue and action, but overall there was something so uniquely creepy and reverential about this book。 damp soil and whiskey smoke and the hyper-sweet tang of rotting meat left sitting with me。

2。5 - Why did I have to read about the colour of everyone’s hands? We’ve got white hands, pink hands, dark hands, brown hands。 Enough with the hands。 You can give a physical description of characters without discussing hand colour。 The idea of the story was good, but the mystery was solved easily, even considering it was drawn out because it was just main characters withholding information the entire book。

This book has a lot of good about it, but unfortunately, it wasn't really the book for me。 I almost DNFed it several times and though I'm glad I stuck with it (it did get better for me), I'm left feeling like this type of book is probably just not the kind I'm attracted to。 And that's OK! I wanted to like this-- everything about the premise screamed my name。 However, something about the writing style put me off right from the start。 And while the main character had interesting elements to her, sometimes it felt more like the author was inserting her own thoughts and opinions on this character than they were actually held by the character itself。By the time the mystery was solved, I didn't really understand what had led to this solution, and I didn't feel that satisfied。 I wanted to like this-- everything about the premise screamed my name。 However, something about the writing style put me off right from the start。 And while the main character had interesting elements to her, sometimes it felt more like the author was inserting her own thoughts and opinions on this character than they were actually held by the character itself。By the time the mystery was solved, I didn't really understand what had led to this solution, and I didn't feel that satisfied。 。。。more

3。5 out of 5。 I found this book to be fascinating。 The way that Native American heritage and origins was woven into this story was so good。 There was so much that I was able to learn from this story that really made me feel emerged into the story。 The author did an incredible job of explaining in so many details how everything in this book worked。 That was so well done。 The only reason I lowered my rating, was the amount of times I found myself not believing the story。 It would get a little far 3。5 out of 5。 I found this book to be fascinating。 The way that Native American heritage and origins was woven into this story was so good。 There was so much that I was able to learn from this story that really made me feel emerged into the story。 The author did an incredible job of explaining in so many details how everything in this book worked。 That was so well done。 The only reason I lowered my rating, was the amount of times I found myself not believing the story。 It would get a little far fetched and reached a little too far。 Other then that, I found this to be a good read。 。。。more

4。5 stars, really。 I found this book to be well-written and highly entertaining; fusing the best elements of a ghost story around the body of a mystery novel, with a homage and nods to the great Stephen King sewn into the lining。 Like the great Stephen Graham Jones, Erika Wurth uses the stories and complexities of indigenous people and their culture in this story, which made it an education for me on top of a fascinating and gripping read。 She even explicitly mentions and recontextualizes the ol 4。5 stars, really。 I found this book to be well-written and highly entertaining; fusing the best elements of a ghost story around the body of a mystery novel, with a homage and nods to the great Stephen King sewn into the lining。 Like the great Stephen Graham Jones, Erika Wurth uses the stories and complexities of indigenous people and their culture in this story, which made it an education for me on top of a fascinating and gripping read。 She even explicitly mentions and recontextualizes the old "Indian burial ground" trope that white writers have been lazily employing for years in ghost and horror stories by reminding the reader that the whole US is an Indian burial ground。 I'm here for her next book for sure。 。。。more
